How To Create A Powerful Social Media Strategy That Gets Results

Ever been handed a 40-page social media marketing strategy? If you're anything like me, you'd probably roll your eyes and wonder who has the time to dive into such a lengthy document. As a social media manager and strategist, I've been there, and trust me, the idea of reading through a 40-page social media strategy can be annoying and leave you thinking "WHY?".

But here's the real question: why do some people create these massive, and annoyingly long social media strategies?

The whole point of a social media strategy is to have a planned approach to how your business is going to use social media platforms to achieve specific goals. It should cover your social media goals, the tactics and objectives you will use to achieve those goals, and the metrics you will track to measure progress.

Now, can you effectively communicate all of this in just one page? Absolutely, and that's precisely what I'm here to guide you through—a concise, one-page organic social media marketing strategy that delivers results.

Perhaps you've encountered a situation where you either lack a social media strategy entirely or you've engaged someone to create one for you, but it came back as a ridiculous 40-page document. Here's the key insight: the success of a social media strategy isn't determined by its page count.

When I see social media strategy templates extending to 20 or even 40 pages, it raises the question: who has the time to go through such a lengthy document, especially if you're not a social media expert?

The truth is, most of us don't.

In my world, where time efficiency is important, the idea of creating a 40-page social media marketing strategy that might never be revisited after the first reading doesn't make sense. Instead, I advocate for a one-page social media strategy that you can easily refer back to whenever you need it. It's not about adding fluff; it's about keeping it simple and to the point.

To help you get started, let's break down the components of an effective one-page social media strategy:

The One-Page Social Media Marketing Strategy Blueprint

Now, let's dive into what you should include in your one-page organic social media strategy:

1. Your Message/Mission Statement In the first section of your one-page strategy, articulate your mission statement or core message. This statement captures your brand's purpose and values, guiding your social media efforts. Example: Message/Mission Statement: Empowering eco-conscious individuals to embrace sustainable living through fashion and lifestyle choices.

2. Goals & Objectives In the next section, list your social media goals and objectives. These should align with your mission and business goals to guide your strategy. Example:

  • Objective 1: Increase brand awareness and engagement.

  • Objective 2: Drive website traffic and conversions.

3. Target Audience Next, define your target audience. Really make sure you understand them on the deepest level and get into their minds. Understanding your audience's interests, desires, goals, and pain points is essential for tailored content creation. Example: Target Audience: Millennials and Gen Z, aged 18-34, interested in sustainable fashion. They are conscious consumers seeking ethical and stylish choices.

4. Competitor Analysis Briefly summarize key insights from your competitor analysis. Highlight what your competitors are doing well and areas where you can excel. Example: Competitor Analysis: Our competitors are active on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. They excel in visual content but lack a strong sustainability focus.

5. Social Media Platforms Specify the social media platforms you'll use based on your audience's preferences and your brand's goals. Example: Preferred Platforms: Facebook, Instagram, Twitter.

6. Posting Schedule and Frequency Outline your posting schedule and frequency. Be consistent, but realistic, about how often you can post on each platform. Consistency is key here, so if it's 3 times a week that's perfectly fine! Example: Posting Schedule:

  • Facebook: 3 times a week 8am.

  • Instagram: 4 times a week 9am.

  • Twitter: 5 times a week 12pm.

7. Social Media Metrics/KPIs Define the key performance indicators (KPIs) you'll track to measure success. These metrics should directly relate to your objectives. Example: Metrics/KPIs:

  • Monthly Reach: 10,000

  • Engagement Rate: 5%

  • Website Clicks: 150

8. Engagement & Community Building (Section 3) Describe your strategy for engaging with your audience and fostering a sense of community. Highlight specific actions you'll take to build relationships. This is time-consuming but extremely important and plays a big role in the success of your organic marketing efforts. If you don't have the time for daily engagement, I recommend outsourcing it. You can learn more about Social Media & Java packages here. Example:

  • Reply to your audience's comments 5 times per week.

  • Engage with 7 expert accounts in your niche 5 times per week.

  • Engage with 7 peer accounts in your niche 5 times per week.

  • Engage on your explore feed and interact with 5 posts related to your niche 5 times a week.

  • Engage with 7 accounts that are your ideal client base 5 times per week.

9. Content Strategy/Framework (Section 3) Elaborate on your content strategy. What types of content will you create and share? Specify your content pillars, tone, and formats. At JMVS, I focus on creating goal-driven content that addresses the different buyer types and takes your audience through the consumer journey.

Content Calendar To help you manage and organize your content across different platforms, I recommend creating a simple content calendar that incorporates topics, key dates, and events that are relevant to your business. You can use tools like Trello, Monday, or Notion for this. Then once content has been created and is ready to go live use a scheduling platform like Later, Sprout Social, or Meta Business Suite.

Why a One-Page Strategy Works

Now, you might be wondering why this one-page strategy works so effectively. Here are the reasons:

  1. Clarity: It provides a clear and concise overview of your social media strategy, making it easy for both you and your team to understand and follow.

  2. Efficiency: You can quickly reference it whenever needed without sifting through pages of unnecessary information.

  3. Flexibility: It's easy to update and adapt as your social media goals and audience evolve.

  4. Focus: It forces you to prioritize the most important aspects of your strategy without getting lost in the details.

  5. Actionable: With a one-page strategy, you're more likely to take action because it doesn't feel overwhelming.

  6. Communication: It's a valuable tool for communicating your social media strategy with your team or clients, ensuring everyone is on the same page.

Another thing you want to keep in mind is seo social. Make sure to research keywords that are ranking on the social media platforms you are using and that they are relevant to your business, content, and audience.

So, ditch the lengthy, intimidating social media strategies and opt for a one-page approach. It's efficient, effective, and aligns perfectly with the fast-paced world of social media.

Whether you're a seasoned social media pro or just starting out, this simple format can make a significant difference in your social media success.

The power of a social media strategy doesn't lie in its page count; it lies in its ability to help you achieve your goals. Keep it concise, keep it clear, and keep it on one page. Your future self—and your audience—will thank you for it.
